THE CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY OF THE PROJECT

  • North Kerala has the second highest consumption of chicken in Kerala, a state where the consumption of poultry products in general ranks amoung the highest in India. The state however lacks the proper facilities required for the safe and sustainable disposal of waste generated from the processing and consumption of poultry and other meat products, even as the present trend indicate a steady increase in the the per capita consumption. 
  • Currently the local markets dispose the waste generated from processing and consumption in landfills in an ad-hoc and unscientific manner, which posses a serious risk to the environment in the long run. This chicken waste can be processed in several ways, but conversion of the waste to high concentrate protein is most viable. 
  • Studies show the demand for protein is rising quickly. The current manufacturers who have entered this field have “cut and pasted” the process model of a large-scale chicken processing unit’s material flow in their plant and process design with few changes. This format has caused serious pollution problems and poor quality of the finished product resulting an unsustainable business model. The promoters have observed the operations of more than 10 such projects in many parts of South India, majority of which have failed, because of the fundamental flaws in project and plant design.
  • The promoters of Green Earth Feeds have studied in-depth the reasons behind the failures and have formulated improved process designs and equipment specifications to arrive at a sustainable and economically feasible model.

A ROLE MODEL PROJECT

The Green Earth model has 5 distinct advantages which will go a long way to solve the current problems of the rendering projects and ensure the sustainability of the project:

  1. The superior raw material collection and handling systems to provide an improved environment from the source shop level to the finished product. This avoids raw material spikes which are a significant cause for stress on the processing system. The improved quality of the raw material and a variety of product formulations will ensure customer satisfaction and retention.
  2. An end-to-end traceability system to provide swift and accurate diagnosis of process and product failures, enabling a high level of process efficacy and skill development.
  3. A 24/7 monitoring system to track the components of the production process in real time to improve the project’s dynamism.
  4. A solar energy plant will enable a carbon neutral footprint for the project. This will also go a long way to ensure the sustainability of the project.
  5. A state-of-the-art effluent treatment system will have source level segregation of effluent gases according to its chemical and physical nature, along with the infrastructure to treat the high volume of gases produced in the system in an efficient and effective manner.

This project is a pioneer in developing an aggregation business model for the rendering industry similar to what Uber is to the urban transportation industry. The key elements for starting the project are well taken care of by the promoters by virtue of being in the industry and in the state of Kerala where the project is to be implemented.
